History of the Hall

The Kauri Public Hall was built in the late 1870s. A tender to construct the Hall was advertised in 1875 and a proposal from Mr M McDonald of £34.10 was accepted. The original members of the Hall Committee included: Mr M McDonald (chair), Mr J.W. Kerr, Mr A McLeod, Mr John McKenzie and Mr D Matheson.

Rural halls have played a very important part in developing community life. Not only have they provided a gathering place for locals, but have also provided a place for the inter-mixing of communities in country dance and sports competitions. Since being built, Kauri Hall has played that part. It has been a scene of wedding receptions, indoor bowls, badminton, community meetings, school activities, pioneer reunions and many other events which have brought together young and old in happy mixtures.
